Telefónica Tech adds US IoT safety deal and 175,000 water meters
TL;DR
- Telefónica Tech partnered with Halotech in the United States for industrial worker safety services using managed connectivity and AI sensors.
- Telefónica also won a contract in Castilla y León, Spain, to connect 175,000 smart water meters using NB-IoT.
- The Castilla y León project will run for more than 10 years and replace manual meter readings with automated continuous data collection.
Telefónica Tech partnered with Halotech in the United States and won a contract in Castilla y León, Spain, to connect 175,000 smart water meters, according to a Mobile World Live report published in June 2026.
In the United States, Telefónica Tech and Halotech are targeting industrial safety use cases in mining, oil, and infrastructure. The offer combines Telefónica’s managed connectivity through its Kite platform with Halotech artificial intelligence sensors built into helmets and other wearable devices. The system provides real-time data on geolocation, falls, and heat stress. Telefónica said analysis of this data can reduce workplace incidents by up to 60%.
In Castilla y León, Telefónica won a contract from the regional government through SOMACYL to connect 175,000 smart water meters. The project will use NB-IoT, a low-power wide-area cellular technology for connected devices, and will run for more than 10 years. Telefónica said the deployment will replace manual meter readings with automated continuous collection of hourly consumption data to help detect leaks earlier and support water resource management.
The projects add to competition among operators in connected utility and industrial services. Mobile World Live reported that Vodafone Spain connects 1.8 million IoT devices in the water sector through agreements including 1 million meters with Aqualia and more than 377,000 with Canal de Isabel II. The report also said MasOrange has focused on the gas market through an alliance with Terranova for smart meter services.
