NTT Docomo Business plans IoT security system for solar sites

NTT Docomo Business began preparing to develop an IoT security system with Tess Engineering to address cyberattacks on devices at the network level.

The companies plan to improve the security of communications infrastructure used for remote monitoring at solar power generation plants by using Docomo’s existing IoT-oriented network-as-a-service platform.

Docomo said IoT devices used to remotely monitor solar facilities often lack the performance needed to implement effective security measures, and that the operating environment creates additional security challenges.

Tess Engineering, which designs and operates solar power facilities, had already reported attacks on communication systems used to send operational data to remote monitoring units. Docomo said the threat detection and blocking functions in its NaaS platform can provide notifications and blocking capabilities, and Tess Engineering is piloting the system at some of its solar sites.
