Qualcomm targets data centre AI chip market against Nvidia

Source: telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.comMay 9, 2026

TL;DR: Qualcomm is targeting the data centre AI chip market, where Nvidia has held a near-monopoly position. The market is becoming more fragmented as companies including Amazon, Anthropic, and Google increase their use of in-house custom chips for training and running large AI models.

Qualcomm is betting on custom AI chips and is targeting the data centre market led by Nvidia, according to an Economic Times report. The report says competition in data centre AI chips is intensifying as the market shifts away from Nvidia's near-monopoly position.

The report states that the data centre AI chip market is becoming more fragmented. It says hyperscalers and AI labs are increasingly developing or using in-house custom chips instead of relying only on third-party suppliers.

Amazon, Anthropic, and Google are among the companies cited in the report as relying more on custom chips to train and run large AI models. The source description does not provide product names, launch dates, pricing, or technical specifications.
