OpenAI tipped to target 2028 smartphone chip production

TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said OpenAI is working with MediaTek and Qualcomm on custom smartphone processors for a rumored AI-focused smartphone, with mass production tipped for 2028. Kuo posted the claim on X, according to Android Authority.

According to the report, the custom processors would be used in an OpenAI smartphone project. Kuo said the chip specifications may be finalized by late 2026 or early 2027, but the report did not include technical specifications, device names, or target markets.

The reported smartphone chip effort would extend OpenAI's custom silicon work beyond data center infrastructure. Android Authority noted that OpenAI announced a deal with Broadcom last year to develop custom AI chips for next-generation computer clusters, while the reported smartphone work involves MediaTek and Qualcomm.
