OpenAI plans screenless AI speaker launch for 2027

Source: mobileworldlive.comJuly 17, 2026

TL;DR

  • Bloomberg reported that OpenAI is developing a portable, screenless smart speaker as its first consumer hardware product.
  • The device is expected to use ChatGPT and OpenAI's GPT-Live voice technology for home control, media playback, and messaging.
  • Bloomberg said OpenAI plans to unveil the speaker at the end of this year, with a 2027 launch subject to the outcome of Apple's trade secret lawsuit.

OpenAI is developing a portable, screenless smart speaker as its first consumer hardware product, according to a Bloomberg report cited by Mobile World Live. Bloomberg said the device will use ChatGPT capabilities to control smart home appliances, play media, and answer questions and messages.

Bloomberg said the speaker will use OpenAI's GPT-Live voice technology to listen and respond at the same time. The report said the device will also include a camera and sensors to help the AI interpret its surroundings, and that it will be rechargeable, portable, and include moving mechanical parts. Bloomberg also said the product will use user data, including emails, to become more personalized over time.

Mobile World Live reported that OpenAI's hardware unit is working on about five products in total and that the speaker is expected to be the first to reach the market. The company spent about $6.5 billion last year to acquire io Products, the device startup co-founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, and Ive's creative studio LoveFrom is also working on the hardware line.

Apple recently filed a trade secret lawsuit against OpenAI and io Products, alleging that former Apple employees were recruited to accelerate development of AI devices. According to the lawsuit, more than 400 former Apple employees have joined OpenAI's hardware development team. Apple is seeking an injunction that could delay sales of OpenAI devices.

Bloomberg said OpenAI plans to present the speaker at the end of this year, with a commercial launch scheduled for 2027 if the lawsuit is resolved. Mobile World Live also reported that Apple is developing its own AI-focused home devices, including a 7-inch smart home control hub with facial recognition tied to a future Siri update in iOS 27.
