Apple, OpenAI and SFR led Mobile World Live's Friday File
TL;DR: Mobile World Live's Friday File highlighted three developments this week: Apple unveiled a revamped AI-powered Siri and new child-safety controls at WWDC; OpenAI confidentially filed for a US initial public offering; and Bouygues Telecom, Free-Iliad Group and Orange signed an agreement with Altice France to acquire and split SFR in a deal valuing the operator at €20.4 billion.
Apple used its annual WWDC event to unveil a revamped AI-powered Siri and new child-safety controls, while Tim Cook delivered his final keynote as CEO. Apple software chief Craig Federighi said the updated Siri would focus on privacy, personal context and deeper app integration. Mobile World Live reported that the AI-upgraded Siri and Apple Intelligence features have been delayed indefinitely in the European Union over competition laws and blocked in China over local AI regulations.
OpenAI confidentially filed a draft registration statement with the US Securities and Exchange Commission for an initial public offering. The company did not disclose the size, price or timing of the listing and said a debut may not be imminent because some actions are easier as a private company. Reuters reported OpenAI is targeting a valuation of up to $1 trillion, with a debut possible as early as September.
Bouygues Telecom, Free-Iliad Group and Orange signed a memorandum of understanding with Altice France to acquire and divide SFR in a transaction valuing the French operator at €20.4 billion. Under terms outlined in April, Bouygues will take 42% of SFR's assets, Free-Iliad 31% and Orange 27%. SFR's consumer mobile and fixed broadband operations will be split between the three operators, Bouygues will take control of the B2B unit, and completion is targeted for the second half of 2027 subject to regulatory clearance.
