AMD plans up to £2 billion UK AI investment over five years

AMD said on 8 June it plans to invest up to £2 billion over five years to accelerate AI innovation and research in the UK. The US-based chip company said the investment will support advanced computing, scientific research and workforce development, while expanding access to infrastructure for AI-led discovery and public sector innovation.
AMD said it will work with Imperial College London on computational science and research in healthcare innovation, climate modelling and AI optimisation. AMD also said it will work with Dell Technologies and the University of Cambridge on national AI infrastructure projects, including the Zenith AI supercomputer and the Sunrise fusion AI system, to support scientific work in healthcare research, materials science and fusion research.
AMD also said it will work with photonic networking company Oriole Networks on the UK Advanced Research and Invention Agency's Scaling Inference Lab, which it described as a national testbed for AI hardware focused on infrastructure bottlenecks. UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves and technology secretary Liz Kendall both welcomed the investment. AMD highlighted the plan at the opening of London Tech Week in London on 8 June; the event runs until 12 June.
