Vodafone ties Samsung Networks prospects to any EU Huawei ban
Vodafone's potential use of Samsung Networks in Europe depends on whether European Union action forces the operator to replace Huawei equipment, according to a Light Reading report.
- Light Reading reported that Vodafone is unlikely to expand work with Samsung Networks unless an EU Huawei ban creates replacement demand.
- The report said Vodafone has exited several markets, leaving fewer opportunities for Samsung Networks within Vodafone's footprint.
- Huawei remains a key factor in European radio access network decisions because forced removal would open contracts for alternative suppliers.
Light Reading said Vodafone has little immediate scope to revive Samsung Networks in its network supply chain after withdrawing from several markets. The report framed Vodafone's reduced geographic footprint as a practical limit on how much business it could offer Samsung Networks.
The report said a ban on Huawei in the European Union would be the main event that could change Samsung Networks' prospects at Vodafone. If regulators required Vodafone to remove Huawei gear, the operator would need replacement vendors for affected network equipment.
Samsung Networks has had limited traction with large European operators compared with established suppliers in the region, and the Light Reading report presented Vodafone as another case where market structure and existing vendor relationships constrain expansion. The article did not describe any new Vodafone-Samsung contract or deployment.
