Vodafone tests AI robotic antenna at Tirana 4G and 5G site

Vodafone Group is testing an AI-controlled mobile antenna with a robotic arm at a site overlooking a shopping centre in Tirana, Albania. Mobile World Live reported the trial on 21 July 2026. Vodafone said the system automatically optimizes 4G and 5G coverage by physically turning or tilting the radio antenna.

The system combines AI-based analysis with automated hardware adjustment. Vodafone said its algorithm evaluates network demand and local conditions, then instructs an autonomous robotic arm supplied by South Korean equipment company Humax Networks to move the antenna as needed. At the Tirana site, Vodafone said the system shifts coverage between commercial and residential areas as usage patterns change during the day, and can also direct more signal outdoors in clear weather or strengthen indoor coverage in adverse weather.

Vodafone said the self-organizing algorithms also respond to local changes such as traffic congestion, allowing antenna positioning to be adjusted before demand peaks. According to the operator, the antenna adjustment process takes 20 to 30 minutes to optimize energy efficiency, while manual reconfiguration can take days or weeks and may require planning permits, site access, road closures, and engineering work. Vodafone said it expects this type of autonomous antenna technology to reach the market in the coming months, with future versions moving internal antenna components instead of the full unit to reduce energy use further.
