TL;DR: Telia and Ericsson have started 6G field trials in Sweden. The work targets coverage, signal performance, uplink capacity, reliability and latency, with commercialisation of 6G planned for 2030 to 2032.

Telia and Ericsson have started 6G field trials in Sweden, moving their research beyond laboratory work. The companies said the trials are part of their effort to support 6G commercialisation in the 2030 to 2032 timeframe.

The trials will assess coverage, signal performance, uplink capacity, reliability and latency. Ericsson is using technologies focused on the upper 6GHz band, which the companies said could form part of future 6G standards.

Future testing is likely to cover the 6GHz and 600MHz bands. Anders Olsson, head of Telia Sweden, said the 6G work is being guided by the needs of society and businesses in Sweden.

Telia and Ericsson launched the NorthStar programme in 2023 to refine 5G for industrial and enterprise use. Earlier in 2024, the companies expanded into 6G research through the Digital Arena Sweden programme and said they are working with industrial, academic and public sector partners.
