Vodafone Spain deploys private 5G for Mossos in Barcelona

Vodafone Spain deployed a private 5G network for the Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia's regional police force, in Barcelona for the security operation during Pope Leo XIV's visit from 9 to 11 June. Vodafone said the private 5G network gives officers an on-demand configurable network and maintains access to network services during periods of high congestion.
Vodafone Spain said it reinforced about 1,000 cells across its 5G and 4G networks in Barcelona for the visit. The operator also activated a special supervision and incident-response mechanism for all network elements involved in the event, deployed several mobile network units across the city, and mobilized more than 100 technicians for the full duration of the visit.
Pope Leo XIV arrived in Barcelona from Madrid on 9 June and was scheduled to remain until 11 June before traveling to the Canary Islands. The agenda included events at Barcelona Cathedral, Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys, Brians 1 prison, Sant Agustí del Raval, the Sagrada Família, and Montserrat. Mobile World Live also reported that Vodafone's deployment followed separate announcements by Movistar and MasOrange, including MasOrange's Orange Drone Guardian service and Telefónica's plan to reinforce more than 1,300 network points.
