Telefonica Spain and Sony test 4K 5G mmWave at Movistar Arena
TL;DR
Telefonica Spain and Sony validated real-time transmission of 4K audio-visual signals over a 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) network at Movistar Arena in Madrid. The test used the 26GHz band, a heavy uplink configuration, and recorded uplink speeds above 1.8Gb/s. Sony said the setup included a remote production unit, a 4K studio camera, a portable data transmitter, and a media processor for decoding.
Telefonica Spain and Sony validated real-time transmission of 4K audio-visual signals over 5G mmWave at Movistar Arena in Madrid. The pilot used the 26GHz band and a network architecture configured for heavy uplink traffic to test support for live event broadcast workflows.
During the trial, the companies recorded uplink rates of more than 1.8Gb/s. Sony said the test setup used a remote production unit for ultra-low latency high-efficiency video coding (HEVC), a 4K studio camera, a portable data transmitter, and a media processor for decoding.
Telefonica Spain and Sony said the network architecture used in the test is intended to support both crowd connectivity and professional applications that require large amounts of real-time upstream data, including multiple video feeds for television broadcasts of sporting or music events. Sony Professional Europe category head of networked live Rob Thorne said 5G production use cases had been limited by bandwidth and architecture constraints.
