Telefonica cut network energy use 12% between 2015 and 2025

Telefonica said in 2025 that its network energy consumption was 12% lower than in 2015, despite a 1,200% increase in data traffic over the same period. The company attributed the change to network efficiency improvements and more advanced energy management techniques.
Telefonica said its network consumed 29MWh per petabyte of traffic in 2025, which it stated was 92% lower than in 2015. The company said the changes came from the technological evolution of its infrastructure and data management, and added that energy optimisation helps offset risks linked to rising energy prices.
Telefonica said its total carbon emissions across its value chain fell 49% between 2015 and 2025. The company added that Scope 1 and Scope 2 operational emissions were down 91%, while Scope 3 emissions were down 34% since 2016.
