Rocket Lab to acquire Iridium for $8 billion

Rocket Lab said the transaction will combine its launch services and satellite manufacturing operations with Iridium’s global satellite communications network, spectrum assets, and partner ecosystem of more than 500 companies. The companies said the combined business would design, build, launch, and operate its own satellite constellations.
Rocket Lab said the acquisition gives it an immediate position in space-based applications including proprietary satellite IoT, standards-based satellite IoT, direct-to-device services, and critical safety-of-life services. The company also said it plans to build on Iridium’s existing network to expand into additional markets and develop new space-based services.
The transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approval. Rocket Lab said it expects the acquisition to close in mid-2027. Mobile World Live reported the announcement as an agreement between the two companies, with Rocket Lab valuing Iridium at $8 billion.
