TL;DR
NTT Docomo selected Ericsson to supply a RAN (radio access network) baseband platform for all generations of its mobile infrastructure in Japan. Ericsson said its RAN Compute equipment supports 4G, standard 5G, and advanced 5G. The vendor said the platform delivers up to 2x the capacity of its previous generation and uses less than half the energy.

NTT Docomo selected Ericsson to provide a RAN (radio access network) baseband platform spanning all generations of the operator’s mobile infrastructure in Japan. Ericsson said the RAN Compute equipment works across 4G, standard 5G, and advanced 5G.

Ericsson said the platform can serve as a foundation for AI-native networks. The company said the equipment expands capacity by up to two times compared with its previous-generation platform and uses less than half the energy, which it said can reduce costs in centralized RAN deployments.

Ericsson said the Docomo agreement adds to its rollout of Massive MIMO equipment with the operator in December 2025. Mobile World Live also reported Ericsson added contracts with SoftBank Corp and KDDI during 2026. Docomo general manager of the RAN design department Masafumi Masuda said the upgrade increases network processing capacity to improve communication quality and meet rising traffic demand.
