Iridium adds LEO satellite coverage to Skywave fleet terminals

Source: mobileworldlive.comJuly 28, 2026

TL;DR: Iridium Communications is integrating connectivity from its low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation into Skywave terminals used for heavy equipment fleet management, adding satellite coverage alongside existing mobile and Wi-Fi connections.

Iridium Communications is integrating connectivity from its low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation into Skywave’s heavy equipment fleet management terminals, according to a Mobile World Live report published in 2026. The integration is intended to extend coverage for vehicles operating in remote areas where terrestrial communications can be unreliable.

Skywave, the intelligent IoT platform brand of Orbcomm, will use Iridium’s satellite network in addition to existing mobile and Wi-Fi access on its terminals. Iridium said the added connectivity supports remote monitoring, diagnostics and predictive maintenance for heavy equipment fleets.

Iridium said the arrangement could expand to other industry verticals beyond heavy equipment fleet management. Orbcomm CEO Sameer Agrawal said equipment makers are looking to modernise legacy deployments and expand connected service capabilities, while Iridium CEO Matt Desch said the agreement supports the company’s global voice, data, messaging, positioning and timing services.
