Eutelsat and MEO expand OneWeb LEO backup services in Portugal

Eutelsat and MEO announced on September 24, 2026 that MEO will integrate Eutelsat's OneWeb low-Earth orbit services into its connectivity offerings in Portugal. The agreement expands LEO connectivity coverage in the country through a combined satellite, fiber and 5G offer.

MEO said it will use the combined network approach to provide backup connectivity for businesses, critical infrastructure operators and other organizations across Portugal. The companies already work together through an existing arrangement under which MEO has hosted Eutelsat ground station infrastructure for several years.

The Portugal agreement was reported alongside other EMEA telecom updates on the same date. Those included nPerf's UK mobile performance survey for the 12 months to the end of August 2026, where EE recorded a 4G coverage score of 96.50 and a 5G coverage score of 77.02.

In the same roundup, Liberty Global said it will deploy Sierra's conversational AI platform across about 80 million fixed and mobile connections in Europe, and SES said it has started building a satellite manufacturing plant in Kockelscheuer, Luxembourg, to support its meoSphere MEO network and Europe's IRIS² program.
