Vodafone tests Nokia IoT core on AWS in Germany

Vodafone Group, Nokia, and Amazon Web Services completed initial tests of running IoT applications on AWS cloud infrastructure in Germany, with Vodafone targeting full commercial trials later in 2025. The companies deployed a proof of concept of Nokia’s mobile data and voice core on AWS infrastructure and integrated it with network components in Vodafone data centres.
The trial supported IoT services on Nokia’s IP Multimedia Subsystem, a core network platform for voice services, and Nokia’s packet core for data services. Vodafone said the setup could support use cases including emergency calls from vehicles and lifts, and smart metering data services for utility companies.
During the tests, Vodafone, Nokia, and AWS assessed lifecycle management, integration with Vodafone’s existing systems, operational performance, costs, and possible new business opportunities from using AWS public cloud. Vodafone said the next phase will address security and sovereignty in further trials before moving to commercial tests, and added that the AWS work forms part of its multi-cloud strategy.
