Vodafone Idea flags equal-treatment concerns in India net neutrality debate
Vodafone Idea said concerns about preferential treatment of subscribers raise questions about equal treatment in India’s digital ecosystem, according to a report published by The Economic Times.
Vodafone Idea made the statement during an ongoing debate around net neutrality in India, the principle that internet service providers should treat internet traffic equally without favoring specific users, services, or platforms. The company said preferential treatment of some subscribers would conflict with the principle of an equal digital ecosystem.
Vodafone Idea has nearly 192 million subscribers, according to the report. The operator has also started a campaign aimed at reassuring its prepaid and postpaid subscribers that they will continue to receive equal priority and equal treatment on its network.
The report frames Vodafone Idea’s comments as part of a broader industry discussion in India about whether some digital services or subscriber groups should receive differentiated treatment. Vodafone Idea’s stated position is that subscriber treatment should remain equal across prepaid and postpaid plans.
