Virgin Media O2 says London planning delays hurt mobile coverage

Source: lightreading.comJune 10, 2026

Virgin Media O2 said London borough planning processes are delaying approval of new mobile sites and reducing mobile coverage in the city, according to a Light Reading report published in the EMEA roundup titled Eurobites.

TL;DR

  • Virgin Media O2 said local planning rules in London are slowing mobile network site approvals.
  • The operator linked those delays to weaker mobile coverage in parts of the UK capital.
  • The claim appeared in Light Reading's EMEA regional roundup alongside separate items on Deutsche Telekom, Palo Alto Networks, the mobile gender gap, and Telefónica.

Virgin Media O2, a UK mobile network operator, said the planning system is undermining efforts to improve mobile coverage in London. The report said the operator's complaint focused on borough-level approval processes for mobile infrastructure.

Light Reading presented the Virgin Media O2 statement as the lead item in its Eurobites EMEA regional roundup. The same roundup also referenced Deutsche Telekom and Palo Alto Networks' sovereignty-related service, a report on the mobile gender gap, and Telefónica asking for company phones to be returned.

The source excerpt and description did not provide figures, borough names, site counts, or a timeline for the planning delays. The available information states only that Virgin Media O2 linked London's planning system to poorer mobile coverage outcomes.
