TL;DR
- T-Mobile said its 2G GSM network will shut down on August 3, 2026.
- The shutdown will end 2G service at the last major US carrier still operating a 2G network.
- Android Authority said 2G lacks modern encryption and remains vulnerable to spoofing and call interception through rogue cell towers.
T-Mobile will shut down its legacy 2G GSM network in the United States on August 3, 2026. Android Authority cited an update on T-Mobile’s Network Evolution support page and said the date was first spotted by Fierce Network.
T-Mobile’s shutdown date means the end of the 2G era for major US carriers. Android Authority said AT&T and Verizon had already shut down their older 2G networks, while T-Mobile kept 2G running longer to support international roamers and legacy Internet of Things devices.
Android Authority said 2G GSM lacks modern encryption, which leaves legacy devices exposed to spoofing and call interception through rogue cell towers. The report said consumer impact should be limited because the remaining users are mainly roamers and older connected devices that have had additional time to migrate.
