Space Compass signs satellite relay MoU with Apolink and JSAT
- Space Compass signed a memorandum of understanding with Apolink and JSAT International to explore optical data relay links between geosynchronous orbit and low Earth orbit satellites.
- The initial focus is to interconnect Apolink’s low Earth orbit data relay network with Space Compass’ geosynchronous orbit network.
- JSAT International is part of Sky Perfect JSAT, which formed Space Compass with NTT.
Space Compass signed a memorandum of understanding with Apolink and JSAT International in March 2026 to explore optical data relay links between geosynchronous orbit and low Earth orbit satellites. The agreement covers joint work on the technical and business potential of connectivity between GEO and LEO satellite systems.
Space Compass said the first area of work is interconnecting Apolink’s LEO data relay network with its GEO equivalent. Apolink, a US-based space communications company, provides LEO connectivity using what Space Compass described as a hybrid RF and optical intersatellite link architecture. The companies said the project aims to develop a concept for relaying information between the two satellite types and assess commercial opportunities and target markets.
The agreement adds to Space Compass’ wider satellite and non-terrestrial network activity. JSAT International is a division of Sky Perfect JSAT, which established Space Compass as a joint venture with NTT. Mobile World Live reported that Space Compass selected Swissto12 last month to build the HummingSat spacecraft and earlier in 2026 signed a deal with Airspan Networks related to 5G HAPS, or high-altitude platform stations.
