MTNL liabilities reach ₹40,000 crore in FY26, Scindia says

Source: telecom.economictimes.indiatimes.comJuly 23, 2026

TL;DR: Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said MTNL's liabilities reached about ₹40,000 crore in FY26 and that no restructuring plan is currently under consideration. He said Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited, which was incorporated in 1986 to provide telecom services in Delhi and Mumbai, has faced severe financial and competitive stress.

Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said MTNL's liabilities reached about ₹40,000 crore in FY26 and that no restructuring plan is currently under consideration. He disclosed the figure in response to a question on the state-run telecom operator's financial position.

Scindia said Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited was incorporated in 1986 to provide telecom services in Delhi and Mumbai. He said the company later came under severe financial and competitive stress.

The statement indicates that the government is not currently pursuing a restructuring process for MTNL despite the operator's reported liabilities. The update relates to MTNL's position in FY26.
