Google expands Gmail username changes to all US accounts
- Google now lets Google Account users in the United States change the username part of their @gmail.com address.
- Google says the previous Gmail address stays as an alternate address for sending and receiving email.
- Users can change their Gmail username once every 12 months, with a lifetime limit of three new addresses.
Google has made Gmail username changes widely available to all Google Account users in the United States, according to Android Authority's September 2025 report. The change applies to the part before “@gmail.com,” and Google began rolling out the feature in 2024 before expanding it across the US.
Google says a user's old Gmail address remains as an alternate address after the change, so the user can still receive and send mail from it. Google limits Gmail username changes to once every 12 months, and each account can create up to three new addresses over its lifetime.
This update changes a long-standing Gmail account limitation by allowing users to modify the primary username tied to an existing Google Account instead of creating a separate account. The report covers the United States only and does not mention availability in other countries.
