Canada’s government selected Ericsson to support 5G development for public safety and defence through the Advanced Wireless Communications Innovation Network (AWIN), according to Mobile World Live.
Ericsson Canada will provide the technology for the project and use the Area XO innovation hub as the site to securely develop and test potential mission-critical 5G services under the AWIN program. Ericsson said the collaboration will target artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), and systems for defence and emergency services.
Canada’s Department of National Defence, other government branches, indigenous groups, emergency services, enterprises and academia will have access to AWIN to advance domestic research and development initiatives. Ericsson will also provide emergency personnel with 5G products intended to improve communication and coordination.
AWIN is tasked with testing real-world 5G deployments intended to strengthen Canada’s critical infrastructure, improve interoperability, and support defence and public safety use cases. The source did not state financial terms or a project timeline.
