Ericsson, AT&T, MediaTek complete North America LTM trial
TL;DR: Ericsson, AT&T and MediaTek completed a North American in-field trial of low-latency Layer 1/Layer 2 triggered mobility (LTM) on AT&T’s Ericsson-powered radio access network (RAN). The companies said the test reduced data interruption during cell changes by up to 25% versus legacy Layer 3 mobility. Ericsson said the broader LTM feature can cut handover interruption time by up to 40%.
Ericsson, AT&T and MediaTek completed a North American in-field trial of low-latency Layer 1/Layer 2 triggered mobility (LTM) on AT&T’s Ericsson-powered radio access network (RAN), according to Mobile World Live in a report published in July 2026. The companies described it as the first North American in-field LTM trial.
LTM is a mobility feature set in Ericsson’s 5G-Advanced critical IoT portfolio that reduces interruption time during handovers between cells. In testing, the companies said LTM reduced data interruption during cell changes by up to 25% compared with legacy Layer 3 mobility, while the broader LTM feature can cut handover interruption time by up to 40%.
Ericsson said the North American trial followed a joint in-field LTM demonstration with KDDI and MediaTek in Japan in February 2026. Ericsson acted as the RAN vendor in the field trials and said it has contributed to LTM development and standardisation within 3GPP. The companies said shorter handover interruptions can support applications including extended reality, immersive video conferencing, cloud applications, industrial automation and connected vehicle analytics.
