Robin Olds of Cisco Systems said on the Beyond the Cable podcast at Connected America that internet service providers should offer tiered levels of service based on quality of service. He said current ISP pricing structures are largely based on bandwidth speeds and argued that providers could monetize other network characteristics.
Olds said service providers could offer network slicing and performance traffic lanes across their networks as additional monetization options. He also said providers should consider latency, jitter, and packet loss when designing service tiers.
Olds said ISPs should consider offering AI edge services to enterprise customers. He added that, as federal dollars are supporting network development, this is a key time for providers to plan what comes next for their networks.
