AT&T, T-Mobile US and Verizon said they have an agreement in principle to form a joint venture in the United States to use satellite-based direct-to-device (D2D) technology to address wireless dead zones, including in rural areas. The operators said the venture will extend mobile connectivity for customers through satellite connectivity that supplements traditional mobile networks.
The three operators said they will pool limited spectrum resources to increase capacity, improve customer experience, and help satellite providers reach more customers through a unified platform. The companies also said the joint venture is intended to create common technical specifications, improve connectivity in emergencies, support efficient spectrum use, and promote industry-wide device compatibility.
AT&T, T-Mobile US and Verizon said their existing carrier-satellite agreements will remain in place and that each partner can continue satellite connectivity efforts independently. T-Mobile US has launched a commercial D2D service with SpaceX, Verizon has launched a satellite messaging service with Skylo Technologies, and both Verizon and AT&T are working separately with AST SpaceMobile. The joint venture remains subject to customary closing conditions, and the companies did not disclose the ownership split, investment level, or detailed service plans.
