Virgin Media O2 reports 5,262 tonnes of CO2 avoided with TXO

Virgin Media O2 said on August 11 that its network equipment circularity programme with TXO avoided 5,262 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions over a decade. Virgin Media O2 said this was equivalent to taking 1,100 cars off the road for a year.

Virgin Media O2 said the programme avoided 4,575 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions by refurbishing and reselling infrastructure including switches and routers. The company said a further 687 tonnes were avoided by purchasing replacement equipment from the secondary market. Virgin Media O2 said TXO calculated the savings using its Carbon Calculator, which TXO developed with the Carbon Trust.

Virgin Media O2 said TXO also recycled more than 690 tonnes of end-of-life hardware through the programme. The company said steel, aluminum, and copper made up nearly 60% of the recovered materials. Virgin Media O2 said domestic processing of the recycled hardware supports its target to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2040.
