Verifone taps Thales eSIM and SGP.32 to simplify global connectivity for POS terminals

Verifone is shifting its payment terminals away from removable SIM cards and country-specific hardware toward embedded eSIMs managed by Thales. Using Thales’ eSIM platform and support for the GSMA’s SGP.32 IoT specification, Verifone aims to ship a single global terminal design, then handle activation and mobile operator selection remotely once devices are in the field.

The move targets the practical headaches of operating large, cross-border terminal fleets: stocking different SIMs, managing local carrier contracts, and maintaining multiple SKUs. With remote subscription management, Verifone and Thales say merchants and payment service providers can keep terminals connected and updated with fewer site visits and less dependency on local SIM sourcing, while operators gain a more standardized way to provision and manage connectivity profiles at scale.
