Telefonica Tech clocks domestic IoT gains
Telefonica Tech has sharply increased its number of connected devices in Spain this year, driven mainly by new road safety rules. The company reported 17 million IoT connections by the end of November, a 240 per cent rise since the end of 2024, and claims this is the highest figure in the Spanish market. A major boost came from the upcoming mandatory rollout of V16 GPS-enabled hazard beacons, which will replace traditional warning triangles from early 2026. Telefonica Tech connects more than 70 per cent of the V16 beacons certified by Spain’s road traffic authority and added 3 million SIMs in Q3 alone, taking its total to 12.3 million lines.
Beyond road safety, Telefonica Tech credits growth to projects in healthcare, industry and utilities. It connects smart water meters and supports predictive maintenance in the aquatic sector, and enables real-time monitoring in the gas industry. In social care, it installs home sensors for elderly or vulnerable people to alert carers to potential issues. The company also supplies IoT services to industrial customers, supporting robotics, digital twins, private communications networks and computer vision systems.
