SK Telecom outlines AI-native network strategy
SK Telecom has set out a long-term plan to turn its mobile network into what it calls an “AI-native” system, built around a new architecture named ATHENA. In a recent paper, part of its ongoing 6G roadmap series started in 2023, the Korean operator describes how it wants to layer artificial intelligence and cloud-based automation into every part of the network after 2030.
The strategy distinguishes between using AI to manage the network itself and building network features that directly support AI services. Over time, SK Telecom plans to extend automation across all network layers, shifting routine operations, optimization, and some decision-making from human engineers to software. ATHENA is pitched as the blueprint for that transition as the company prepares for 6G-era networks and AI-heavy traffic demands.
