Ofcom hails lift-off for D2D satellite services in the UK
Source: lightreadingDecember 9, 2025
UK regulator Ofcom has cleared the way for mobile operators to offer direct-to-device (D2D) satellite services using their existing mobile spectrum. The move means UK networks can now partner with satellite companies to provide connectivity to standard smartphones in areas with poor or no mobile coverage.
Ofcom has set out how and when operators can share spectrum with satellite partners, aiming to expand basic coverage for calls, texts and low-speed data, particularly in remote regions. The framework focuses on using current mobile bands rather than creating new spectrum allocations, to speed up deployment while keeping tighter control over interference and service quality.
