O2 readies Stamford Bridge with mobile capacity boost for matchdays

O2 has upgraded mobile coverage in and around Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge to cope with heavy matchday traffic from more than 40,000 supporters. The operator has tuned the rooftop mast to add capacity across the stands, concourses and hospitality areas, aiming to keep digital tickets, contactless payments, streaming and messaging working when the ground is full. New small cells and site upgrades in nearby streets are meant to ease pressure on the network as crowds move to and from the stadium, with benefits for local residents and businesses as well.

Virgin Media O2 says early data shows matchday customers now use more than twice as much mobile data as before, while seeing four times faster speeds. The Stamford Bridge work sits inside the company’s broader Mobile Transformation Plan to extend 4G and 5G coverage, roll out small cells in dense areas and tackle recurring congestion hot spots such as transport routes, airports and large venues. The operator is also putting recently acquired spectrum from Vodafone UK into service, taking its share of UK mobile spectrum to about 30%, and points to independent testing that ranks O2 as Europe’s most improved mobile network.
