China Mobile to be last in HK to end 2G service
China Mobile Hong Kong has clearance to shut down its 2G network on 23 June 2026, making it the last of the territory’s four major operators to retire the legacy service. The company says fewer than 2.3% of its customers still use 2G. It has started telling affected users to upgrade their SIM cards and, if needed, their handsets.
China Mobile already switched off its 3G service in April, which served just 0.25% of its base. GSMA Intelligence data shows the operator is Hong Kong’s largest, with 8.5 million mobile connections, ahead of Hutchison (3 Hong Kong), HKT and SmarTone. Just over half of its customers use 4G, with the rest on 5G. Rival operators have already exited 2G: 3 Hong Kong in 2021, SmarTone in 2022 and HKT with approval to shut down in late 2024.
