China designates satellite broadband as top priority
China has put low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite broadband near the top of its telecom agenda, saying it will speed up development of satellite Internet services to narrow the gap with the US. Officials have signaled more state backing for domestic LEO constellations, framing satellite broadband as strategic infrastructure rather than a niche add-on to fiber and mobile networks.
The push is expected to channel more public and private investment into satellite manufacturing, launches and ground systems, and to tighten coordination among state-owned operators, equipment makers and space contractors. By elevating satellite broadband to a national priority, Beijing is positioning it as a critical layer in future networks, especially for remote regions and as a hedge against dependence on foreign systems.
