Algeria and Nigeria aim to expand satcoms capabilities
Two of Africa’s largest states are moving to strengthen their satellite communications infrastructure, underlining how central space-based connectivity has become to the continent’s telecom plans.
Algeria has announced a new satellite launch to boost its national satcom capacity, while Nigeria has confirmed plans to acquire an additional communications satellite. Both moves are aimed at improving coverage, particularly in areas where terrestrial networks are weak or too costly to build, and at securing more control over strategic communications services. The steps reflect a wider regional trend: African governments are turning to satellite technology to extend broadband, support public services, and reduce dependence on foreign-operated capacity.
