Parliamentary panel suggests MeitY seek expert views on GPU plans
A parliamentary standing committee has asked the IT Ministry (MeitY) to bring in outside experts before moving ahead with plans to build India’s capacity in graphics processing units (GPUs) and advanced chips. The panel flagged that India’s dependence on imported integrated circuits is rising fast, with chips now the country’s third-largest import after crude oil and gold. Between April and December of fiscal 2026, India imported semiconductors worth $12.62 billion, according to official data.
The committee wants MeitY to spell out a clear strategy to tackle technical, financial and supply-chain hurdles tied to GPU development and deployment, instead of pushing large public spending without a grounded plan. It has recommended detailed consultations with specialists on chip design, manufacturing and infrastructure so that any domestic GPU initiative fits real demand, cost constraints and long-term security goals.
