AMD buys HBM4 from Samsung for AI data centers
AMD has signed a deal to use Samsung’s next-generation HBM4 high-bandwidth memory in its upcoming AI-focused hardware. The memory will power the Instinct MI455X GPU, described as an AI accelerator, and AMD’s 6th-gen Epyc server CPUs, codenamed Venice. Together, these chips are aimed at AI data centers that pair Instinct GPUs with Epyc CPUs and rack-scale systems such as AMD’s Helios platform.
The memorandum of understanding was announced at Samsung’s advanced chip plant in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, during a signing event attended by AMD CEO Lisa Su and Samsung Electronics CEO and Vice Chairman Jong-Hee Han. The agreement underlines how chipmakers are locking in memory supply for next-generation AI systems that depend on fast access to large datasets.
