Worries about 5G uplink capacity for AI are overblown – analyst
Fears that AI and augmented reality apps will overwhelm 5G uplink capacity do not match what is happening in the field, according to testing by Signals Research Group. Their network measurements found that these applications barely move the needle on uplink throughput, but they do trigger a notable jump in signaling traffic – the control messages that set up and manage connections.
The findings suggest mobile operators do not need major new investments to handle AI-related uplink demand, but they may need to watch and tune how their networks process signaling. The pressure point is less about raw bandwidth and more about how often devices and the network talk to each other in the background.
