Why going cloud-native is the most important upgrade a mobile network operator can make right now
Telecom executives talk a lot about becoming a “cloud-native mobile network operator,” but the term rarely lands outside industry circles. That gap in understanding matters, especially in Southeast Asia, where decisions on how to modernise networks are shaping the region’s digital infrastructure. In simple terms, cloud-native networks move core functions from fixed, hardware-bound systems into software that runs on flexible cloud platforms.
The shift is no longer theoretical. Malaysia’s Tune Talk has become an early mover, working with vendor Mavenir to rebuild key parts of its network using cloud-native technology. For operators, this kind of upgrade promises faster rollout of new services, more efficient use of network resources, and an easier path to scale as data traffic grows. For customers, the change should show up as more reliable connectivity and more tailored services, even if they never hear the phrase “cloud-native” at all.
