Using AI to slash 5G emissions and hit ESG goals
New research suggests that applying AI to manage 5G networks can cut their energy use sharply, turning what is often treated as a narrow cost issue into a wider climate lever. Instead of just trimming operators’ power bills, smarter, AI-driven control of network traffic, capacity, and infrastructure could remove millions of tonnes of CO2 from national carbon footprints.
The study positions 5G energy efficiency as a tool for meeting environmental, social, and governance (ESG) targets at scale, not just a technical tweak inside telecoms. Policymakers and operators who treat AI-enabled efficiency as core network design rather than an optional upgrade are more likely to see measurable emissions reductions alongside financial savings.
