Telefonica, Vithas tap quantum tech for drug research
Telefonica is working with healthcare research body Fundacion Vithas and Francisco de Vitoria University on using quantum computing to help design new cancer drugs. The project combines classical and quantum computing to model molecules that can block a specific mutation linked to various malignant tumours. Telefonica says quantum methods can scan through chemical options far faster than traditional computing, cutting research time.
Juan Cambeiro, who leads applied quantum projects at Telefonica Spain, frames the work as proof that quantum computing is now a practical tool across sectors including healthcare, industry, logistics and banking. The partners are also using traditional machine learning alongside quantum circuits in an effort to make drug discovery more efficient and, over time, more accessible. Details of the project will be presented at MWC26 Barcelona in March on Telefonica’s stand, with a dedicated roundtable planned. Fundacion Vithas is part of the Vithas private hospital group, which previously worked with Telefonica on quantum key distribution to protect patient data.
