SpaceX rebrands direct-to-device service as Starlink Mobile
SpaceX is rolling its direct-to-device satellite service into a new offering called Starlink Mobile, built on the company’s second-generation low Earth orbit satellites. The move is aimed at fitting the service into 5G-era networks, so phones can connect directly to satellites without special hardware.
The updated satellite constellation is designed to deliver about 20 times more link performance than before, with speeds reportedly up to 150 Mb/s and support for much higher data volumes. SpaceX is positioning Starlink Mobile as an upgrade over its earlier D2D experiments, framing it as a step toward tighter integration between satellite and terrestrial mobile networks.
