Sony plans AI frame generation for future PlayStation updates
Sony is working with AMD to bring AI-powered frame generation to PlayStation in the future, aiming to boost frame rates without new, more powerful hardware. PlayStation lead system architect Mark Cerny described the effort in an interview, saying the companies want to use machine learning to make existing consoles render games more smoothly.
The work centers on Project Amethyst, a graphics-focused machine learning system tuned for PlayStation hardware. It builds on AMD’s upcoming FSR Redstone suite, which supports image upscaling, AI-generated frames, and ray reconstruction. Sony has not given a release window, but the plan is to add these features through software rather than a hardware refresh.
