Satcom, Vi survival, online frauds keep sector abuzz in 2025
India’s telecom sector enters 2025 pulled in three directions: satellite communications, the fate of Vodafone Idea, and a sharp rise in online fraud.
On one side, satellite communication is moving from pilot projects to commercial reality, with global and local players chasing spectrum and approvals to offer broadband from space. How the government prices and allocates satellite spectrum will shape competition between satellite operators and traditional mobile networks.
On another, Vodafone Idea’s survival still hangs on regulatory relief and fresh capital. A December CLSA report said the government may consider waiving some interest, penalties, and interest on penalties that make up most of the company’s adjusted gross revenue dues, and could extend the moratorium on AGR payments. Without meaningful relief and new investment, Vi risks further network deterioration and customer loss, which would tighten a market already dominated by two stronger rivals.
At the same time, cyber and digital payment frauds are rising as more users move to UPI, wallets, and app-based services. Regulators and operators face pressure to tighten KYC, block suspicious routes, and improve user awareness, even as scammers keep shifting tactics. The year ahead will test whether policy can balance sector stability, new satellite opportunities, and basic consumer protection.
