Private 5G networks: Solving the space and power problem
Private 5G is pitched as the backbone for automation, low-latency control, and data sovereignty in factories, warehouses, and retail sites. In practice, many projects stall at the hardware stage: traditional 5G core and RAN equipment is designed for data centres, not cramped back rooms or shop floors with limited power and cooling. Fitting full-scale, power-hungry infrastructure into small sites often means compromising on performance or abandoning deployments altogether.
Vendors are now trying to cut that barrier down by shrinking the footprint and power draw of private 5G stacks. The focus is on compact, energy-efficient hardware and integrated platforms that can run core, edge applications, and management tools on fewer boxes. The aim is straightforward: make private 5G practical for space‑constrained and power‑limited environments so enterprises can deploy advanced connectivity where they actually operate, not just where they have room for a mini data centre.
