New Dutch govt coalition puts focus on digital autonomy and well-being
The new Dutch governing coalition has put digital policy near the top of its agenda, naming both "digital autonomy" and "digital well-being" as priorities in its agreement. The parties say the Netherlands should be less dependent on foreign technology providers and digital infrastructure, and want to strengthen control over data, networks and key systems. This includes closer scrutiny of strategic tech, more attention to security and resilience, and making sure public authorities can operate without being locked into a few major vendors.
Alongside this, the coalition links digital policy to residents’ quality of life. It highlights risks such as online addiction, misinformation and pressure on mental health, and calls for clear rules to protect citizens in the digital space. While specific measures are still to come, the agreement frames digital choices as core to national sovereignty, social stability and day-to-day well-being, rather than a niche technical topic.
