Intel Discusses AI, 5G Innovation and the Road to 6G
Intel is positioning its chips and software as core tools for today’s 5G networks and tomorrow’s 6G systems, arguing that general-purpose, programmable hardware will carry more of the load as networks become heavily data- and AI-driven. Company executives say operators want to cut costs and power use while adding new services, so they are looking for more flexible infrastructure that can be updated in software instead of relying on fixed-function gear.
On the road to 6G, Intel points to tighter integration of AI across the network, from the radio layer to the core, to automate management, improve performance and tailor services. The company expects future standards to lean on edge computing and more advanced silicon to process data closer to users. For now, Intel is focusing on improving 5G performance, supporting open network architectures and building a bridge from current deployments to whatever 6G eventually becomes, rather than promising a sudden, clean break.
