Imec, ASML open new pilot line for chip research with EU backing
Belgian chip research centre Imec has opened a 2,000-square-metre extension to its clean room, adding a new pilot line to develop next-generation semiconductors. The expansion, supported by EU funding, is aimed at advancing research into more powerful and efficient chips, a strategic priority as Europe tries to strengthen its position in the global semiconductor supply chain.
The new facilities will be used in partnership with Dutch lithography specialist ASML and other industry players to test and refine cutting-edge chip technologies before they move to full-scale production. The pilot line is meant to bridge lab research and industrial manufacturing, giving European chipmakers earlier access to new processes and tools.
